Two SEK-CAP Head Start Centers have each been awarded a $5,000 grant to improve their outdoor play spaces. The Parsons and Galena centers received this funding through the Head Start Body Start (HSBS) National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play, who distributed 372 of these grants nationwide in an effort to increase physical activity, outdoor play, and healthy eating among Head Start and Early Head Start children, families, and staff. The playground improvements will include the addition of shade trees and perennials to enhance children’s sensory experiences and shade opportunities, climbing hills to boost children’s gross motor development, and a variety of playground equipment designed to engage children in unstructured play activity where they develop physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills.
